About Amy Michelle Asher
You may know her as Amy or Shel (yes that's short for Michelle), don't worry she answers to both. A dog lover and horticulturist, she has been painting since she was a toddler.
Amy Michelle attended the University of Kansas graduating with a BFA in painting in 1998. For 15 years Shel has worked in the residential landscape industry, designing outdoor spaces and gardens as well as painting in her studio. She has been a part of many group shows in the midwest as well as the east coast, including a 2007 co-exhibition with her husband, Arian Gimbutas, in Brooklyn, NY. Review of this show was written up in the New York Times. There are also articles from the Myrtle Avenue /Fort Greene papers. Shel and her husband also have a small company, Red Red Robot, together they design and implement childrens murals and signage. Shel earned her Masters in Studio Art degree from The University of Missouri-Kansas City in December of 2014. She continues her studio practice within the rooms of an historic building in the Scarritt Renaissance neighborhood in KCMO (Go Royals!).
Shel was diagnosed with stage II breast cancer in April of 2013, at the age of 36. After a double mastectomy and 7 rounds of chemotherapy, she was cancer free until June of 2015 when she was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer in her bones and liver. She currently resides in her hometown of Kansas City, Missouri with her husband, daughter, dogs and cats.
